Prayer Column

We read from Romans ch.11 and 12 ‘We all have different gifts...’. May our ‘gifts’ mark us out as followers of Jesus.

We gave thanks for the example of Pope Francis who has followed in the steps of his namesake St. Francis by putting compassion into action and by disciplining bishops following lavish lifestyles.

We prayed for Justin Welby and the Anglican bishops, speaking out for the poor. We remembered, also, Rev. Keith Hebden whose 40 day fast is to highlight the plight of the needy. The Methodist Mission Society has been spreading the gospel around the world for 200 years. We gave thanks for its ongoing work.

Thanks too for ‘Biblelands’ and their ‘Open Book’ initiative – going into schools dressed as bible characters and telling their story. This is often the only contact some children have with the Bible. Tearfund has asked us to pray for its work with children in Haiti where for the past 30 years they have been helping them gain an education.

Our prayers continued for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine and other areas of unrest, particularly Syria and Iraq.

Closer to home we prayed for good weather and attendance at up and coming community initiatives. Lent and Easter events—giving thanks for our Chippy Church and the Emmaus meals each week in Lent. The Wisewood Community Garden open day event on Saturday 26th April 10am—1pm. The Fun Day in Hillsborough Park on Saturday 3rd May 1pm—4pm. May we always reflect the spirit of God.
