Prayer group column

We read from Philippians chapter 4 v.4: “Let your gentleness be evident to all... the Lord is near...” etc. We offered prayers for peace and guidance as we hear reports of turmoil, war, rumours of war, pestilence, poverty etc.

In Syria opposing factions are still fighting and people are living in awful conditions with little or no medical care.

In Palestine some have been living as refugees for 40 years and many were made homeless following the recent conflict.

In West Africa thousands have already died and many more are likely to die from the Ebola virus for which there is no specific treatment as yet.

The Islamic State group is continuing its brutal offensive against Kurdish people (and others) in northern Iraq.

A typhoon has caused much devastation in Japan.

The people of Latvia are concerned that their democracy may suffer the same fate as Ukraine and feel threatened by the closeness of Russia.

We prayed for reason and justice to prevail, for a cessation of fighting and for a solution to the Ebola crisis - giving thanks, meanwhile, for volunteers and care workers helping sufferers and for aid agencies working in so many emergency situations.

Thanks too for the courage of Malala - for her outspoken view on education for all which has gained her a Nobel prize.  May she be a strong voice for equal rights and peace as she looks to her future.

We gave thanks that British Muslims are showing their allegiance to this country. Imams and the Muslim Council of Britain have denounced the actions of I.S. and younger Muslims have started a "Not in my name" campaign against I.S.extremists.
