Prayer group column

On Missions Sunday and following the previous day's 'Churches Against Poverty' pilgrimage, we read from Isaiah 58 v 6 - 9... "You will call and the Lord will answer...".

We gave thanks for the work done by all the agencies helping the needy and homeless, both here and abroad, by providing food, medical care, accommodation, education, training etc... So many people are suffering injustice, hunger, homelessness etc... and trying to survive in war-torn areas.  We prayed for them all and also remembered those who are being held as slaves or being trafficked.  Many children are vulnerable to sex trafficking.  We prayed against poverty, which is at the root of this problem, and gave thanks for those working to rescue people living in poverty. We prayed for the girls still held by the Boko Haram group in Nigeria. May the news of a cease-fire bring the girls' captivity to an end and see them returned to their homes.

Our prayers continued for all those suffering as a result of the Ebola virus and those working to relieve the plight of the sick and the bereaved. The locally based charity 'Taste' helps provide clean water for disadvantaged communities in Nigeria. Dan Walker, who hosts the BBC's Football Focus programme, is its patron and is in Nigeria with a group from 'Taste' at present. We prayed for the work they are doing there.

We thought about the difficulties faced by teachers and pupils in our schools, especially the problems with opposing gangs and the recent outcry at Hinde House school.

In Parson Cross the food bank has been burgled three times in the past two months. We prayed for those involved.
