Prayer group column

In Psalm 91 we read: 'He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.' We see on the news the terrible events bringing suffering to so many people, especially across the Middle-east and Africa, at present:- the I.S. conflict in Iraq and Syria is bringing death, injury and fear of bombing to local people causing them to flee their homes in terror to seek refuge in nearby countries where there are now many thousands of refugees. In addition I.S. terrorists are holding captives to ransom who are in fear being put to death.

The turmoil continues in South Sudan where individuals are fighting for survival.  Many have fled their homes and land leading to a lack of farming and a consequent lack of food may lead to famine in the area.

In Sierra Leone and other parts of Africa the Ebola virus rages and thousands have already died. We prayed for peace where there is conflict and for treatments to be available to combat the Ebola virus.

In Hong Kong, where the people have become used to democratic government, we prayed that recent demonstrations may lead to discussions and an acceptance of true democracy by Chinese leaders.

We gave thanks that the cease-fire is still holding in Gaza and that some resources are now being allowed into Palestine. We prayed that there may be a stronger accommodation of a two state country and prolonged peace and reconciliation instead of hate and anger.

Thanks too for Christians from 'Biblelands' showing God's love to the injured and homeless and providing bibles in Arabic, especially for children. We prayed for the family of Alan Henning who went to Syria to help the needy and has been murdered by members of I.S. We also remembered those previously killed by I.S., those still held hostage by them and their families. May the good news of Jesus bring hope to those who long for peace and reconciliation.
